May 7th 1945- May 8th 1945
V-E day or Victory in Europe day, is the day in which the european allies officially accepted the surrender from Nazi Germany on may 8th,1945, marking the formal end of the war in Europe, however the pacific campaign of the war was still ongoing. After Hitler’s alleged suicide on april 30th 1945, he left Karl Dönitz the German president in charge of the depleted german forces and was left vulnerable to allied troops from both sides. German troops were in disarray and began rapidly falling to the Russian forces from the east and british, french and US troops from the west. After being surrounded by ally troops for nearly two weeks Karl Dönitz approved and signed a formal surrender of Nazi Germany to the Allied Forces on May 7th, 1945, and was later ratified on May 8th 1945. After the war, V-E Day became an official holiday and is celebrated to this day.
Victory in Europe Day holds much significance to World War II because it marks the end of the initial war started in Europe. This was truly a great feat because people thought that the war would never end at times, and to many people the end of combat seemed surreal. V-E Day was also a great motivation for the west to end the war entirely, and the need for ending the war was now greater than ever.
